FIRE Calculator

Find your Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) number from your annual expenses, then see how many years it could take to reach it based on your savings and contributions.

Your FIRE plan

Your FIRE number is based on this — how much you'd need to withdraw each year to cover your lifestyle.

An assumption you choose, not a guaranteed return.

4% is a commonly cited U.S. FIRE rule of thumb (equivalent to a 25x-expenses target), not a guarantee.

How the FIRE number is calculated

Your FIRE number is your annual expenses divided by your chosen withdrawal rate — at the commonly used 4% rate, that's the same as 25 times your annual expenses. This calculator then projects your current savings and monthly contributions forward at your assumed annual return, using the same compound-growth engine as every other calculator on this site, to estimate the year your balance first reaches that number.

None of this is a guarantee — future returns are unknown, and a withdrawal rate that worked historically isn't certain to hold for any individual's actual retirement. Treat the result as a planning reference point, and consider speaking with a licensed financial professional about your specific situation. If you'd rather target a fixed retirement age instead of an expense-based number, see our retirement calculator.

A FIRE calculator works out your "FIRE number" — the investment balance considered enough to sustain your annual expenses indefinitely at a chosen withdrawal rate — and projects how long it could take to reach it given your current savings, contributions, and an assumed return.
