How retirement income is estimated

This calculator first projects your balance at your target retirement age using the same compound-growth math used throughout this site. It then applies your chosen withdrawal rate to that projected balance to estimate a sustainable annual and monthly income — a common planning approach in the U.S., often referenced alongside the "4% rule." That estimate is not a promise the balance will last a specific number of years; actual sustainability depends on real returns, inflation, and spending, none of which are fixed.

If you want to work from your target spending instead of a target age, see our FIRE calculator, which sizes a target balance directly from your annual expenses.
