How the projection is calculated
The calculator applies your annual return as a monthly rate (the annual figure divided by 12). Your starting amount compounds from the first month. Each monthly contribution is added at the end of its month and compounds from then on. The year-by-year table shows, for each year, the balance you start with, what you added, the growth, and the balance you end with.
Everything rests on the return you enter. It isn't a forecast, and VOO's real returns vary a lot from year to year, including years with losses. For the full formulas, see the methodology page or the walkthrough of how to calculate VOO returns.
